About Françoise Vaal

Art about landscape, belonging, and remembrance.

I am Françoise Vaal, a photographic mixed media artist from the Netherlands. In my work, I explore the relationship between humans and nature, not as a romantic notion, but as something we can experience physically and sensorially. My images arise from a desire to learn how to see again, in a time when many people live primarily within schedules, screens, and speed.

I work with photography, collage, and paint. Sometimes I begin with a landscape that overwhelms me through its scale, its silence, or its indifferent beauty. Sometimes with something small: a plant, a texture, a shadow on stone. In both cases, I am guided by the same question: what does it feel like to be part of something larger?

In my work, the landscape does not appear as a background, but as a presence. A force. An intelligence. I am drawn to rugged places, terrains not designed for comfort. There, where the human becomes small, something else often emerges: respect, stillness, remembrance.

My mixed media collages often carry a layered quality. I construct images the way experience itself unfolds: not linearly, but in layers of perception. Paint and texture give the photograph a physical skin.

For me, collage is a way to make an inner journey visible. Some works feel like a portal or a threshold, as if you are standing at the edge of another way of seeing.

My art is not meant as an escape, but as a return. To the body. To the landscape. To the place where we instinctively know: this is real.

Alongside my autonomous work, I write essays and stories about sensory intelligence, connection to nature, and the loss of attention in the modern world. These texts are an extension of my visual language. Image and word together form a single movement: an invitation to trust what you feel before you explain it.

I create work for those who are moved by nature, silence, and meaning. For collectors who do not simply want to hang something on a wall, but to inhabit it.

Welcome.

"My passion for nature is driven by its awe-inspiring beauty and dramatic landscapes, where each rugged terrain holds a mysterious story waiting to be uncovered.

The vastness of the natural world evokes a deep longing within me, a desire to explore its hidden corners and connect with its ancient power.

In the face of nature's rawness, there is a sense of hope—hope that, through exploration, we can understand our place within it and find a deeper sense of belonging to the earth."
